The story of The Honer began with a gemstone journey rooted in Sri Lankan tradition, practical knowledge, craftsmanship and a vision to bring the beauty of gemstones to the world.

The story of The Honer began in 2019 with a simple introduction to the world of gemstones.
What started as curiosity gradually became a deep personal journey into natural gemstones, traditional gemstone knowledge, cutting, jewellery craftsmanship, design and technology.
Along the way, knowledge was gathered not from one source alone, but through experienced people, traditional gemstone traders, practical learning and years of personal study.
That journey continues to shape The Honer today.
A NAME INSPIRED BY A GEMSTONE
One of the first gemstones that became part of this journey was Tourmaline, traditionally referred to in the Sri Lankan gemstone trade as "Pani Thora."
The name carries an association with its warm, honey-like beauty.
That early connection with the gemstone became part of the inspiration behind the name The Honer.
What began with a gemstone eventually became something much greater — a journey into understanding the stone, appreciating its natural character, learning how to bring out its beauty, and finally presenting it as part of a beautifully crafted piece of jewellery.
The Honer is, in many ways, a name born from a gemstone journey.
KNOWLEDGE PASSED FROM EXPERIENCE
The journey was first opened through a close family connection — the younger son of the founder's maternal aunt, who had around 30 years of practical experience in the gemstone business.
Although his knowledge came primarily through practical experience rather than formal gemological education, he had spent years working closely with traditional gemstone traders.
That first introduction created a desire to learn more.
Because genuine practical gemstone knowledge is not always easy to find, the journey continued through several teachers and experienced people within the trade.
The learning extended into: Gemstone identification, Traditional gemstone trading, Colour evaluation, Gemstone valuation, Cutting, Jewellery making, Natural stone selection, Understanding traditional practices within the trade.
This became the foundation upon which The Honer was eventually built.
BEYOND APPEARANCE
One of the most important stages of the journey came through learning from a traditional gemstone trader from Ratnapura, Sri Lanka.
This experience went far beyond simply learning the names of gemstones.
It involved learning how experienced traders look at a stone — its colour, character, quality, potential and value.
It also included learning about the realities of the gemstone trade, including the ways in which stones can be misrepresented or treated deceptively.
Most importantly, it developed the ability to examine and select natural gemstones through practical, hands-on experience.
It was through this stage of learning that the founder felt a deeper understanding of gemstones had truly begun.
FROM ROUGH STONE TO BEAUTIFUL GEM
A gemstone's beauty is not only found in what comes out of the earth.
It is also revealed through the skill of cutting.
When looking at a rough stone, it is important to understand what the stone may become — what size, shape and proportions may be possible, and how the cutting process can influence its final beauty.
This is why gemstone cutting became another important part of the journey.
Learning to cut also created a deeper appreciation for well-cut gemstones and the craftsmanship required to bring out their natural character.
For The Honer, a gemstone is not simply something to purchase.
It is something to understand, select, shape and present with care.
CRAFTING THE COMPLETE CREATION
The journey eventually moved beyond gemstones and into jewellery making.
Jewellery making was initially explored in connection with Astrology Jewellery, particularly the desire to understand how gemstones could be properly prepared and incorporated into jewellery.
That interest developed further into: CAD Design, Rhino, Jewellery Design, Casting, Finished Jewellery.
Learning these areas created an important perspective: A beautiful gemstone deserves a setting that complements it.
The goal is not simply to place a gemstone into a piece of metal.
It is to create harmony between stone, proportion, design, metal and craftsmanship.
TWO WORLDS. ONE CONTINUOUS JOURNEY.
The journey into gemstones did not happen in isolation.
It developed alongside a professional career in the Sri Lankan insurance industry.
Insurance became an important part of the founder's professional life and provided an opportunity to meet and understand people from many different backgrounds.
Through that experience came a deeper appreciation of people, their lives, their hopes and the importance they place on meaningful things.
At the same time, the interest in gemstones continued to grow.
What began as an interest gradually became a serious pursuit of knowledge.
GEMSTONES AND HUMAN MEANING
In Sri Lankan culture and traditional gemstone practices, gemstones have long been associated with ideas such as wellbeing, prosperity, protection and inner strength.
These are traditional beliefs and cultural perspectives rather than medical claims.
For The Honer, this cultural relationship with gemstones became another reason to study them more deeply — not only as beautiful natural materials, but as objects that can carry personal meaning and significance for the person who wears them.
This perspective continues to influence the philosophy behind The Honer's Astrology Jewellery.
LEARNING BEYOND GEMSTONES
As the vision grew, another question emerged: How can traditional knowledge and craftsmanship be brought into the modern world?
That led to learning areas beyond gemstones and jewellery, including: Graphic Design, Digital Design, Website Development, Facebook Marketing, YouTube, Artificial Intelligence, Digital business tools.
Artificial Intelligence became particularly important because building a modern business requires many different skills, while time is limited.
AI became a tool to help bring ideas together, explore possibilities and develop a larger vision.
BRINGING THE HONER TO THE WORLD
The vision was never intended to remain limited to a physical gemstone business.
The idea was to create a modern digital destination where people from around the world could discover: Natural Gemstones, Sri Lankan Gemstone Heritage, Jewellery, Design, Knowledge, Astrology Jewellery, Craftsmanship.
The Honer website is therefore more than an online shop.
It is intended to become a place where the beauty and knowledge surrounding gemstones can be experienced through modern technology.
And the journey continues.
